The
MacAusland Blanket is a truly
authentic, hand-crafted gift
item of Atlantic Canada, made
on Prince Edward Island from
raw wool produced throughout
the Atlantic region. The making
of the blanket is an intricate
and skilled craft.
It begins with the washing
of the raw wool, which is
subsequently dried and picked
to remove grit and open up
fibers. The cleaned wool is
then carded (combed), and
spun into thread. The thread
is then warped and tied onto
the loom ready to be made
into blankets. When the blankets
are made, they are preshrunk
and washed. Some blankets
are dyed and others are left
in natural shades.
Finally, the woven blankets
are dried "napped"
or brushed to make them fluffy
and warm, cut into blankets,
hemmed and folded ready for
sale. The result is a unique
blanket which is warm, soft
yet durable, and as beautiful
as it is practical.
